The new Wave SE sails have radically more shape forward than any windsurfing sail I've ever made. I am referring mainly to the two battens directly above the boom. Battens #3 and #4 have a very deep draft right behind the mast. Having this extreme shape forward gives the sails a very stable, yet powerful feeling. I believe that all sails are much too flat in the front in this area, which makes them not want to fly in a stable manner. The flatter sails feel twitchy and require constant trim from the sailor. Just like if you tried to sail with a piece of flat plywood. The critical design feature is that the draft does not extend back. The endobatten allows us to really wind up the batten tension and still keep the sail symmetrical and easy to flip. A traditional batten pocket would not work with my new profile. The draft in the middle battens is very rigid, almost like having a cam, but the sail still has a soft feeling and flips easily. The fact that the batten is so locked makes the sails very stable.

Other Refinements
We have new sleeve cloth this year for the wave sail. This cloth has surpassed my expectations. We now have much stronger yarns in the warp and weft, plus an extra weftyarn that stops the tears from traveling up the sleeve. While testing the sleeve cloth, two of my riders broke masts at Hookipa. Neither of them tore the sleeve. But what was most surprising is that both of the guys sailed their rigs back to the beach with fully brokenmasts and the mast sleeve material held together and did not tear. In my 30 years of windsurfing I have never seen this happen, let alone twice! Also new this year is the tack pulley. I have had many people request a pulley over the years and I finally got around to designing one. At first I looked at just using the same pulley design that Pryde and everyone else uses. After testing it I realized that it had a design flaw because the pulleys turn in opposite directions when threaded for a standardbase. They need to have dividers to stop the pulleys from touching. The dividers also stop the rope from jumping a pulley while rigging. There are other smaller improvements as well. Our new clew patch better supports loading. We have a new head patch and extra reinforcement on the foot of the sails. Also we have a new window shape and additional leech stabilizers between battens #3 and#4.
The 6.5 and 7.0 SE have 6 battens (like last year) but I have shortened the booms up a bit on both, which gives them nicer handling. These two sizes are called "Ezzy Wave Free-Ride Edition". This will help you sell them better to the free-ride market. Last but not least, we have greatly enhanced the colors for '07. All of the new colors are very noticeable on the water.

Windsurf Magazine 4.7 sail test - Ezzy SE 2006

At a Glance
The Wave SE continues to evolve year upon year at the experienced hands of David Ezzy. Sticking to his principle of using no monofilm in his sails, the 2006 SE includes a new type of X-ply in the foot, with double the amount of Spectra yarns so as to reduce the risk of any rips occurring as a result of impacts. Designed for manoeuvreoriented sailing on any sea state, from flat water to idyllic cross-off wave conditions, it is a beautifully engineered sail with a build quality and attention to detail second to none (although there is a lot of Velcro present in the tack fairing, making access a little fiddly).

Using a 400cm RDM (although said to be compatible with a standard mast as well), the new SE is designed to be set under less downhaul tension so as to make rigging easier and improve its low-end performance. Whilst working very well in this set, we found that the tuning range available on the SE is exceptional; with more downhaul applied the centre of effort is locked securely in the front of the sail, providing unfaltering top-end stability.

Irrespective of the downhaul tension, a reasonable amount of outhaul must be used, whilst pre-shaping is permanently present in the lower half of the sail.

Ride and Handling
On the water, the new SE gave a very rounded performance that impressed everyone who tried it. Generating plenty of drive low and forward in the foil, it feels incredibly positive yet crisp in the hands, any increase in power instantly being transferred to the board. Cutting efficiently through the air, it is fast and comfortable over distance, the constant steady power delivery enabling the rider to concentrate on their next transition, rather than worry about control issues. On the wave, the SE’s energy can be utilised to drive confidently into the turn, and whilst not going completely neutral, its balanced nature makes it easy to reposition in preparation for a dynamic cut-back. In overpowered conditions, more downhaul allows the leech to open progressively, which in turn locks in the stability and unveils the sail’s awesome wind range. The draft simply doesn’t move, holding its shape and manners superbly in the most adverse conditions.

For:
Controlled, constant and precise power delivered at your very fingertips.

Against:
Fort Knox to get into the tack fairing, and the outhaul indicator string is of
little use.

Verdict:
A real gem of sail, providing constant, balanced power across a simply massive wind range!
It comes very highly recommended by us.
